The European Union has extensive expertise in museum management and in establishing public policies for the culture and museum sectors. Therefore, promoting dialogue between the EU and Brazil in this segment is of great importance to the Brazilian Museums Institute (IBRAM), considering the possibilities for the exchange of know-how and the promotion of technical cooperation between Brazil and Europe. IBRAM is particularly interested in extending protection to its museums and improve the quality of museum management, bearing in mind the different situations of risk and loss that affect museums and their collections, including inadequate conservation and storage, the shortage of technical and human resources and criminal actions such as thefts, robberies and vandalism, which have grown and challenged the authorities.
To that end, the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility is supporting technical missions of Brazilian experts to three European countries (France, Belgium and Germany), with the aim of increasing the responsiveness of the Brazilian government against the risks to which its museums are exposed, as well as of improving activities in museum preservation and dissemination, management of museums and collections, and of designing a study to establish supranational mechanisms to protect and promote the country’s museum patrimony. This action also includes a mission of European experts to Brazil to learn about Brazilian policies and the country’s progress in the museum sector in recent years.
Among the main results expected of this action are: closer relations between the Brazilian Museums Institute and its counterparts in European countries; promoting exchanges of best practices in protecting and promoting museums; and gathering inputs for the design and improvement of national policies for the museum sector.
