Experts met on 2-3 August at the National Institute of Industrial Property – INPI in Rio de Janeiro to discuss the potential implementation of a unified label for Geographical Indications (GIs) in Brazil.
“The goal of the seminar was to share knowledge, experiences and best practices in GIs, in addition to discussing changes to regulations related to geographical indications that could help improve communication with consumers of GI products," said Patricia Metzler Saraiva, the Coordinator of Geographical Indications for Agricultural Products with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply – MAPA.
Portuguese consultant Ana Soeiro presented the experience of the European Union in the creation of a unified GI label that covers all countries in the EU. Two official labels are currently in use in the EU. These refer to the designation of origin and geographical indication, which are the two existing protections under the European legislation. They are mandatory for agri-food products, but optional for wines and spirits.
According to Ana Soeiro, the labels could also be applied to promotional materials and other products that use GI-protected products as inputs. Each EU member country is responsible for overseeing use of the logos on products.
In Brazil, GI registration is under the jurisdiction of the INPI, and is granted to products or services whose geographical names have become known for their history, reputation or attributes that are exclusively or essentially associated with their geographical source.
The seminar brought together experts from different agencies and institutions, as well as representatives from registered GIs. It was held as part of the Sector Dialogues, a cooperation mechanism between the EU and Brazil for the exchange of technical and political knowledge, experiences and best practices.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agricultural Product Geographical Indication Division in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services – MDIC, the INPI and the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service – Sebrae.
