The large airport in the small town of Farnborough, which lies 50 kilometres southwest of London, hosted the world's largest aerospace event on 16-22 July. It’s the “FIA 2018 – Farnborough International Airshow,” where over 75 countries are represented by more than 1,500 exhibitors, with an estimated audience of about 73 thousand visitors from all around the world.
The Brazilian technical mission visited the Aviation Fair to learn about the state of the art in technologies in the aerospace sector comprises Madison Coelho de Almeida, the Coordinator-General for Development and Innovation of Strategic Technologies of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC), and by Brazilian and European consultants Luiz Guilherme Esmanhoto and Andrea Ranieri, respectively, hired by the project “Study on New Technologies – Aircraft and Air Traffic," under the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
"It has been a week of useful technical visits and meetings. We had the chance to attend talks by experts from various countries and visit booths sponsored by the largest aircraft and aircraft engine manufacturers (with a focus on low carbon research) and British CT&I institutions such as the Universities of London, Leicester and Cranfield, among others, not to mention Aerospace 4.0, which in this edition of the fair is highlighting digital processes of industrialisation,” says Almeida.
According to the Brazilian expert, the expected knowledge to be gained has being exceeded, and the project goals – scenario-scoping and technological prospecting – has being fully achieved.
“It is clear in this event that not only countries with a tradition in the aviation industry are in attendance, such as Brazil, the United States, European Union countries, Russia, China, Japan, India, Canada, and Australia, but also entrant nations, such as Ukraine, Turkey, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Romania. And there are obviously countries that already account for a significant share of innovation in aviation technology and manufacturing of components and systems, such as Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, and Switzerland from outside the EU,” says the Brazilian expert.
One of the highlights of this mission was the meeting the group had with a delegation from the European Commission's Directorate General for Research and Innovation. Head of Unit Sebastiano Fumero, Deputy Head of Unit Andrea Gentili, and project leader Pablo Perez-Illana were in attendance. “We envisage not only potential collaboration between government agencies, but also industrial/technological cooperation by European and Brazilian institutions and companies. These activities not only enhance the project and the EU-Brazil partnership, but also generates inputs for Brazil to implement policies aimed at technological development and innovation. Benefits are unlimited,” says Almeida.
The next stages of the project include preparation and dissemination of a study by the end of the year, as well as exchanges with air traffic management authorities in the EU.
