NBS event in A-Coruña, Spain
In A Coruña, Spain, Guilherme Wiedman, Deputy Coordinator-General for Human and Social Applied Sciences at MCTIC (Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations, and Communications) discussed the preliminary findings of studies conducted by experts Cecília Herzog (Brazil) and Carmen Rozado (Europe) under the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Initiative’s Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) project.
At the same seminar on NBS innovation (H2020 Clustering Action “Transforming Cities, Enhancing Well-being: innovating with nature-based solutions), Cristiano Cagnin, from the Centre for Strategic Studies and Management (CGEE), discussed the connection between the NBS initiative reported by Wiedman and the Urban Innovation Think Tank.
“In addition to disseminating our successful cooperation and connecting with relevant European players in the NBS arena, we have kicked off negotiations for the integration of the OPPLA Platform with our Knowledge Platform on Sustainable Cities, an initiative by the MCTIC in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility - GEF," said Wiedman.
The experts then headed to Brussels to attend the Consolidating an EU-LAC R&I Dialogue on Sustainable Urbanisation workshop. This is an EU-CELAC initiative led by Argentina, where the priority themes for cross-national cooperation, mechanisms for engaging new member countries, and the context of cooperation within the European Commission were discussed.
The workshop was led by Adam Tyson, Head of International Cooperation with North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission; Marie Yeroyanni and Emanuela De Menna, Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission; and representatives from CELAC countries involved in the initiative. Brazilian experts presented the findings of the NBS study in Brazil and the state of the art of EU-Brazil cooperation on NBS under the Sector Dialogues Facility.
In 2017, they attended an event in Tallinn, Estonia that was similar to the one they had attended in A Coruña. In addition to providing opportunities for learning and development, the events play the key role of helping identify synergies and set up partnerships between Brazilian and European institutions.
“The contents are always top-notch, and the exchange of experiences has a positive impact on the design and implementation of public policies on sustainable urbanisation for Brazil and, judging from the reaction to the Brazilian experiences reflected in the study, they are also a source of inspiration to our European partners,“ said Wiedman.
