The Call 180 is a Helpline for Women that has been improved with the support of the European Union - Brazil Sector Dialogues as part of a project to fight domestic violence against women. This social service is operated by the National Ombudsman of the Ministry of Human Rights (MDH), which will now provide swifter support to victims and ensure their allegations are timely sent to the proper authorities.
This free and confidential helpline operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in Brazil and in 16 (sixteen) other countries: Argentina, Belgium, Spain, USA (San Francisco and Boston), France, French Guiana, Holland, England, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela. You can also receive support from the Helpline via email (ligue180@mdh.gov.br), the Proteja Brasil app or the Online Ombudsman service.
In addition to receiving calls to report cases of violence against women, sending the allegations to the competent authorities and monitoring them, the Call 180 Helpline also disseminates information on women's rights, legal protection, shelter and support networks.
Technical missions
In September, as part of the activities under the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues, the Minister of Human Rights, Gustavo Rocha, participated in technical visits in Lisbon, Portugal, together with other members of the National Council of the Public Prosecution Service (CNMP). This technical mission to Europe is part of a project supported by the Sector Dialogues and aimed at improving the risk assessment form for the prevention of domestic violence against women.
Based on information compiled by the National Domestic Violence Registry (CNVD), established by CNMP Resolution 135/2016, and scientific studies on the subject, the technical document will help in the assessment of the level of risk the victim faces of being assaulted in the course of the investigation, or even of being the victim of femicide as a result of filing a report.
"The fight against domestic violence against women is a priority and a central issue in public human rights policies in Brazil. And, in this context, building a scientific foundation for dealing with this issue is a critical step towards an effective victim-focused protection system. Therefore, exchanging information and good practices with European countries is extremely useful, and will play an important role in contributing to the creation and implementation of a national risk form in Brazil, aimed at preventing domestic violence against women. This initiative has the unconditional support of the Ministry of Human Rights", said the minister, who is also an advisor to the CNMP.
