"Did you know that to make a loaf of bread you need hundreds of litres of water?” asks the European Union Ambassador to Brazil, Ignacio Ybáñez, as he presents the report "No Waste: Dialogues on Sustainable Consumption", marking the end of another project by the successful EU-Brazil partnership to tackle food waste.
Issues like this sparked debate among students and educators, as part of the communication strategy to raise awareness among elementary and high school students in Brazilian public schools about food waste and sustainable consumption.
The initiative is built on a project developed by Embrapa jointly supported by the EU-Brazil Dialogues, which led to the production and publication of #NoWaste, an Educator's Handbook for teachers, and of a Turma da Mônica a well-known comic book, in Brazil. The handbook brings suggestions for playful educational activities on sustainable consumption and the impacts of food waste on the environment.
The comic book titled "Eating without wasting", edited by Maurício de Sousa Institute, had great impact, as well as the handbook, which contributes to the education of young people-from 11 to 17 years old- and which teachers can use in the classroom or other appropriate spaces for the carrying out of the activities proposed.
To maximize the impact of the project, other in-person activities were developed with students and teachers at Embrapa Acre (Rio Branco - AC), Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros (Aracaju - SE) and at Embrapa's headquarters in Brasilia. In addition, with the support of WWF-Brazil, a partner of the No Waste initiative (www.semdesperdicio.org), digital influencers were invited to go on a day trip to the Pipiripau rural unit (DF) to discuss sustainable food production and consumption.
The report summarizes the actions of the initiative, and the materials produced are still being used even after the conclusion of the project, and can potentially be disseminated to other similar actions, such as the Nordic Dialogues, an initiative of the embassies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to discuss sustainability with students from public schools in the Federal District; the Schools at Ceasa programme, and the Embrapa & School programme.
