From March 5th to 10th, Brazilian experts participated in a technical mission in Europe for Collaboration on Natural Disasters. The goal is to continue the ongoing exchange of knowledge on disaster management and to discuss partnerships with the Joint Research Center (JRC), located in Ispra, Italy, for the early warning of extreme short-term climatic events that can lead to floods and urban landslides.
This mission is part of the activities supported by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Facility, led by three researchers from the Brazilian National Centre for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN), Dr. Liana Anderson, Dr. Conrado Rudorff and Dr. Christopher Cunningham. CEMADEN is an agency part of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication (MCTIC) which goal is to monitor conditions that can trigger natural disasters at various timescales.
One of the mission's objectives was to discuss drought monitoring in the semi-arid region of Brazil. CEMADEN has a network of soil moisture sensors in the region that can be used together with the water balance models developed in the JRC. In this way, research teams can work together on strategic case studies to get mutually beneficial products that will improve the capacity to monitor and predict potential floods and droughts on a regional scale with the provision of relevant information for decision making at local scale.
"The EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility has strongly contributed to establishing the partnership between the JRC and CEMADEN in the monitoring of agrometeorological risks. Through this partnership between the EU and Brazil, it is possible to set a joint working partnership up in the development of a flood and flood forecasting system for Brazilian river basins. Work continues to develop and will be published in scientific publications coming soon”, said Christopher Cunningham.
