On June 24th and 25th, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) is holding a Workshop in Brasilia on the Recognition of Brazilian Geographical Indications (GI) in the European Union.
Consultant Liliana Locatelli is one of the guests and will be addressing the Geographical Indication system in Brazil. Portuguese consultant Ana Soeiro will, in turn, present the procedures for protecting third-country GIs in the European Union.
The event will feature lectures on GI structure, control and traceability procedures. One of the topics will be the GIs of São Matheus (yerba mate) and the Cerrado Mineiro Region (coffee). There will also be a panel to discuss the promotion of Brazilian products abroad.
The event targets producers and technicians working with potential and official Geographical Indications. According to the Secretariat of Innovation, Rural Development and Irrigation of MAPA, it is essential to have a strategy for Brazilian GIs to enter the international market.
The workshop is part of a MAPA project under the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, in partnership with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), the Ministry of Economy (ME) and the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil (Delbra).
GI
Geographical Indications (GIs) are important tools for product and region differentiation and recognition. They can add value and enable them to enter premium markets in a competitive globalized agrifood chain.
GIs are a way of setting products apart through their typicity, quality, tradition and production culture. They are internationally recognized and valued as an intellectual property right, specially in the European Union. Countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Portugal have several products registered as a geographical indication. Their consumers recognize and value these products, which are also the main exports of those countries.
