The action Promoting Ethics and Citizenship among Adolescents in Brazil, coordinated by the Controladoria Geral da União - CGU [Office of the Federal Controller General] and sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, carried out a mission to Europe, in April, so that Brazilian public servants could learn about successful experiences in this area. Two public servants from the Secretaria de Transparência e Prevenção da Corrupção [Secretariat for Transparency and Corruption Prevention] at CGU participated in the mission: Audria Cristina Coelho Constantin, Financial and Control Analyst; and Marcelo de Brito Vidal, Deputy Coordinator for Federative Cooperation and Social Control.
The first item of the mission program was a visit to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where Federal Government representatives visited Aflatoun, an NGO which runs a social and financial education program targeting children and adolescents, already in place in over 120 countries. In Vienna, they visited the Austrian Federal Anti-Corruption Bureau (BAK, acronym in German), which promotes educational actions for the prevention of corruption geared towards adolescents, at Austrian schools. On that occasion, they participated as observers of an anticorruption workshop at a local school.
According to Audria Constantin, the experiences and information obtained from both institutions will be extremely useful for the technical qualification of CGU and also for enhancing the actions aimed at disseminating ethical values and citizenship principles among children, adolescents and the country’s youth. She stressed that “the knowledge acquired will be transferred to other Government and non-government partners involved in programs aimed at fostering citizenship education in Brazil”.
