The European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, an initiative coordinated by European Union Delegation to Brazil – DELBRA and the Ministério do Planejamento, Orçamento e Gestão – MP [Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management], held the workshop “Innovation, Validation and Regulation: A Bilateral Perspective on Alternative Methods to the Use of Animals”, which took place on April 6, in Brasília. The activity is part of the action program and seeks to combine the efforts of scientific and regulatory authorities from the European Union and Brazil to achieve common goals related to the theme, under the direction of the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação - MCTI [Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation] in partnership with the Joint Research Centre (JRC).
The following representatives were present at the opening session of the workshop: Piero Venturi, Head of the Science and Technology Division at Delbra; Luiz Henrique Canto Pereira, General Coordinator for Biotechnology and Health of the Secretariat for Research and Development Policies and Programs at the MCTI; Giovana Veloso, National Deputy Director for the Sector Dialogues Project; Maria Sueli Soares Felipe, Coordinator for Technological Development and Sustainability at Agência Brasileira de Desenvolvimento Industrial - ABDI [Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development]; and Maurice Whelan, Head of the Systems Toxicology Unit of JRC's Institute for Health and Consumer Protection.
Maurice Whelan, who spoke at the “Innovation” panel, said that he felt honored to come to Brazil to participate in an event on alternative methods to animal experimentation. “This matter must be regulated and the workshop was an excellent opportunity to discuss this issue”, he said. In this regard, Piero Venturi pointed out that JRC and MCTI are the main partners to the Sector Dialogues Project, having developed fruitful and promising actions. According to him, “The Project operates as a seed that, after it develops, continues to bear fruits, even after the programmed activities are completed”. Giovana Veloso pointed out that the Project was created to translate political and strategic partnerships into technical collaborations by means of knowledge exchange. She pointed out that “At every event, we notice that this goal has been successfully achieved”.
