Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology employed to analyse the environmental impact of products and services, which contributes to the development of public policies on sustainable production and consumption. Co-ordinated by the Brazilian Institute of Scientific and Technological Information (Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia – IBICT), the primary goal of the Brazilian Life Cycle Assessment Programme (Programa Brasileiro de Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida – PBACV) is to structure a National Life Cycle Inventory Database capable of organising, storing and disseminating standardised information on Life Cycle Inventories for industrial production in Brazil.
As part of the 7th Call of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, in 2014 IBICT, in partnership with the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s scientific research entity, mapped best practices of LCA in a number of European countries and conducted a comparative analysis of the Brazilian system, providing a foundation for addressing the issue, while promoting continued cooperation between Brazil and the EU in LCA.
To lay the technological and policy bases required to consolidate the SICV Brasil, the initiative aims to identify international technology guidelines on the operation of life cycle databases applicable to the Brazilian context and to collect information on the efforts of European countries to establish management, maintenance and use policies for their inventory databases. In this light, the initiative will encompass contracting of a Brazilian expert and a European expert to prepare a study on the topic, a Brazil-Europe mission and a National Seminar on LCA.
