In 2009, the National Supply Company (Conab) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) signed a Cooperation Agreement (TCA) to exchange data and information on the use of geotechnology in agricultural monitoring and crop forecasting. The agreement aimed to instruct technicians from stakeholder Brazilian institutions on the use of the system developed by the JRC to estimate crop productivity, and to share with EU countries the regionalised dynamics of Brazilian agriculture.
This action is a follow-up to the TCA that expired in February 2014. The project includes hiring an expert to prepare a basic project that will provide guidelines and targets for the implementation of a crop monitoring system similar to the one used in Europe, and a mission of Brazilian technical staff to the JRC headquarters in Ispra, Italy, to exchange information on crop monitoring, its implementation and application in regional yield forecasts in crop growth models.
The institutions participating in this action believe that it will strengthen understanding between Brazil and the European Union in the generation and provision of agricultural data. The monitoring and forecasting of the Brazilian crop will be perfected, and the action should contribute to the smooth flow of exchanges between Brazil and the EU.
