The main purpose of this project is to foster EU-Brazil cooperation throughout the drafting of the Brazilian Long-term Strategy on climate change, allowing European and Brazilian organizations to share their knowledge.
In 2018, the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change (FBMC) started to develop a proposal for the Brazilian long-term strategy (LTS) for 2050, which should be submitted to the UNFCCC by 2020.
This work is being carried out through the Thematic Long-Term Strategy Chamber (CTLP), which coordinates the process and is preparing a document containing the proposed sections for the Brazilian Long-Term Strategy (BLTS). A consolidated version of this document was presented at COP24 and, after new revision, the final text will be handed to the Brazilian government in 2019, as well as to subnational players and the civil society.
The organization of several multi-stakeholder seminars in partnership with European organizations is some of the planned activities to be accomplished by the project. In addition, a European Senior expert together with a Brazilian senior expert will both draft the strategy in order to compile and draft the recommendations of the Brazilian LTS.
In the end, the project also aims to engage the Brazilian civil society in the building of these recommendations for the LTS. Due to the current political and economic situation, it is even more important that different sectors of Brazilian society support the drafting of the report and that a consensus be reached on the importance of long-term planning for climate change in the country.
