Following up on the actions from previous calls, the Ministry of Environment and DG Environment have dialogued about experimental programmes on payment for environmental services (PES) since 2011. Discussions take place both under a conceptual approach, and through the compilation of PES experiences in Brazil and the EU as well as in other countries and regions. This action aims to hold a joint mission to seek practical solutions to develop and implement policies for the use of PES in Brazil and in the EU. This initiative aims to develop own models based on successful experiences in other countries, such as the one in Mexico, which has an arrangement whereby users of environmental services (cities, water utilities, industries etc.) are called on to make financial contributions to develop best management practices and help conserve and restore the ecosystem. Throughout these years of exchange between Brazil and the EU, issues of mutual interest have been identified, including the potential use of incentive mechanisms for the conservation and sustainable use of legally protected areas, and the need to involve the private sector, which should be taken into consideration to complement public funding for the use of PES as a tool for reducing deforestation.
