She also holds a doctorate in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Oulu. Marja conducts interdisciplinary research on future mobile communication systems, business technology and regulatory perspectives. She currently manages a research project in Finland, which has close collaboration with industry and policy makers, to develop a new concept of micro-operator with the aim of increasing the service area in 5G.
She has published about 100 scientific articles and has prepared 100 contributions to spectrum regulatory forums in Europe (CEPT) and the world (ITU).

Sector Dialogues - After the 2nd Edition of the ICT Week, what do you think about this thematic event and the importance to continue with coming editions? Is Innovation and Digital Transformation a key issue to be follow up addressed within the EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership?
Marja - This event brought together European and Brazilian ICT experts and to discuss future developments which brought new insight due to the specifics of each area. Innovation and Digital transformation continue to be relevant high-level themes. The focus areas under them for the coming editions can be targeted to specific developments.
Sector Dialogues - What can we expect regarding Innovation and Digital Transformation worldwide? Is it assume as a risk or a challenge in order to be replaced by robots in most functions in the future?
Marja - It is a challenge and opportunity to develop new ways for the entire society to function. Many manual tasks can be atomised which calls for changes in people’s occupations and required skills. Education is the key to prepare for the future.
Sector Dialogues - Comparing with some countries, Brazil is very underdeveloped regarding digital transformation. What are the main challenges that Brazil faces?
Marja - Lack of knowledge of the English language limits the global opportunities. Brazil is a large country with massive population that currently has unequal access to digital services. Brazilians need to be connected to the internet to enable equal opportunities to people regardless of where they live.
Sector Dialogues - In your opinion, which countries are global leaders and example of innovation and digital transformation? How can Brazil make part of the fourth industrial revolution and come together with them?
Marja - USA is a leader in terms of new successful companies with worldwide markets.
