The Minister-Counsellor of the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil (DELBRA), Carlos Oliveira, opened the ICT Week 2017 on Monday (4) in Brasilia. The two-day event will discuss what he calls the 'fourth industrial revolution' - 5G, IoT, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. For Mr. Oliveira it is clear that in this discussion about digital transformation, we need to involve many key actors, such as companies, academy and civil society in order to find solutions to the challenges presented. "The goal is to find an integration of points that lay deep within issues that go beyond geographical and political boundaries." Mr. Oliveira commented.

Brazilian and European experts, representatives of government and technology companies from Brazil and abroad will meet in Brasilia on December 4 and 5, during the ICT Week 2017 which has the theme "Innovation and Digital Transformation". Participants will discuss, through lectures, panels and round tables, current topics on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G for remote areas, Start-ups, ecosystems of digital innovation and Advanced Manufacturing. This event is promoted by the European Union and the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC), within the framework of the Sector Dialogues Support Facility.

On November 30th and December 1st, the workshop, Innovation on Photonics & Nanotechnology for Medical Devices, was held in Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil). The event is organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications of Brazil (MCTIC) and the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil (DELBRA), with the support of the Sector Dialogues. The objective was to stimulate projects that link the use of nanotechnology and photonics to the development of techniques for equipment and intelligent systems of diagnostic and therapeutic medicine.

On the same week that the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was celebrated (25), the European Union (EU) and Brazil joined forces to discuss ways to tackle domestic violence, by holding the International Seminar Brazil-European Union on Domestic Violence and promoting meetings on the subject with different authorities. These activities, supported by the Sector Dialogues, are part of the cooperation agreement signed in August by the Delegation of the EU to Brazil (DELBRA) and the National Council of the Public Prosecution (CNMP) on gender violence.

In recent years, experts have been promoting nature-based solutions in order to adapt and improve cities, increase the access to water, protect natural ecosystems, reduce disaster risks and weather effects, among other issues. One of the main reasons is the accelerated growth of cities, which consequently increases the demand for natural resources, causing negative impacts to the environment. In this sense, the protection of natural ecosystems is important, and it is fundamental to make biodiversity and society more prepared for the impacts caused by climate change.

Food waste represents a clear picture of the inefficiency of our eating habits. The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), WWF-Brazil and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the aim of raising awareness on food waste and change in eating habits, organised, on Tuesday (31), at the Museum of Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAR), the Seminar “Sem Desperdício” (Food Waste). The meeting brought together experts from Denmark, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Sweden, as well as Brazilian researchers and national retail and industry representatives.
