Brazil has used the same electric utility metring and billing system for a long time now: in sum, a technician goes door-to-door every month to read the numbers on residential metres, interval clocks which, in a majority of Brazilian households have been equipped with the same technology for over thirty years. The central challenge is that this technological gap has made it nearly impossible for end consumers to manage daily consumption. Nor do the metres provide any indication as to the times and appliances that consume the most energy, for the simple reason that they are not properly equipped for this purpose.
